IPI resolutions on Ethiopia journalists held in prison.

Meeting at its Annual General Assembly 14 May, 2007 in Istanbul, Turkey, the IPI members,International Press Institute, adopted a resolution calling on the Ethiopian authorities to immediately release all imprisoned journalists and refrain from punishing the media for its reporting.

The IPI membership believes that editors and journalists have been arrested as a punishment for their writing. Therefore, the IPI membership calls on the Ethiopian government to release all imprisoned journalists, halt the closer of media organizations and allow the foreign media access to the country. Ethiopia, where the government launched a massive crack down on the private press by shutting newspapers and jailing editors,leading CPJ's (Committee to Protect Journalists), dishonor roll.
Indicator: Imprisonments rise from two to 18. Dozen forced into exile.In 2006 alone,authorities ban eight newspapers,expel two foreign reporters, and block critical Web sites.Only a handful of private newspapers now publish, all under intense self-censorship.

Ethiopia has acquitted 8 newspaper editors and publishers but still holds at least 12 more that were rounded by following the aftermath of the 2005 general elections. All the prisoners were accused of attempted genocide and treason and faced life imprisonment or death penalty if convicted.

Freedom House has tracked a disturbing five-year downward trend in Ethiopia,where an already repressive environment became much worse in 2006 since the government began cracking down on critical journalists be expelling foreign correspondent and imprisoning opposition reporters.

Internet watchdog on Thursday accused Ethiopia of blocking scores of anti-government Web sites and millions of blogs in one of sub-Saharan Africa's biggest cases of cyber-censorship.Woyanne propaganda minister dismissed the report as "a baseless allegation." "We may have technical problem from time to time ,"information minister spokesman Zemedkun Tekle. "But we have not done anything like that." Liar!
The OpenNet Initiative- a partnership between Harvard law School, and University of Toronto and Cambridge and Oxford-said it had gathered proof of interference. "We have run diagnostic tests using volunteers in Ethiopia which indicate that they are blocking IP addresses," OpenNet research director Robert Fan's said, referring to the unique numeric addresses of Web sites---

ኤሊያስ ክፍሌን በመክሰስ ብቻ ጊዜያችሁን አታጥፉ ። አንዴ ሃገር ውስጥ ፣ አንዴ በውጭ ሃገር....። በፍፁም አልቻላችሁትም ። ግፋ ቢል በሁለት አሮጌ ኮምፒውተሮች ነው መከራ የሚያሳችው ። እናንተ ግን ብዙ ብሮችና ብዙ የተባበረ ጭንቅላት ይዛችው ነው የምትከታተሉት ። ያውም በመክሰስ ጭምር ። የመሰላችሁን ትፅፉ የለም እንዴ ስለኤሊያስና ድረ ገፁ !! ኤሊያስ መች ከሰሳችው !! ፀሃፊ ነን የምትሉ ከሆነ ብዕራችውን አሳዩን እንጂ ሃምሳ ጊዜ ፍርድ ቤት አትሩጡ ። ኤሊያስ እኮ ስሙንና አድራሻውን በግልፅ አስቀምጦ ነው የሚፅፈው ። ሁልጊዜ እሱን የምትወነጅሉት ሰዎች የት ነው ያላችሁት ? እነማን ናችው ? "ወያኔ ናችው" ከመባል በቀር ምንም መረጃ የለንም ። ወያኔ ደግሞ አንድ ሰው ወይም መለስ ዜናዊ ብቻ ዓይደለም ። ህዝቡ የመለስ አስተዳደርን "ሰላማዊ ሰው ገዳይ ነው" ብሎ ለለውጥ የተነሳሳው ሌላ ገዳይ ለመተካትም አይደለም ። መንግሥትና የመንግሥት ደጋፊዎች እንደምትሉት "ሕገ-መንግሥታዊውን ሥርዓት ሕገ-መንግሥታዊ ባልሆነ አካሄድ" ለመገልበጥ የሞከረም የለም ። ይህ ሁሉ ውሸት መሆኑን ታውቃላችው ። እንደኔ ፣ እንደኔ እባካችው ሃሳብን በነፃነት የመግለፅ መብቱን በሚገባ የሚጠቀመውን አንድ ኤሊያስ ክፍሌና ድረ ገፁን አትዘንጥሉ ። ይህን ጋዜጠኛ ኢትዮጵያ ውስጥ ብታገኙት እኮ በመድፍም የምትለቁት አይመስልም - እንደ አፈራራችው ።
